Having car insurance is an important responsibility every driver should fulfill in Virginia. More than 50,000 car accidents in the Commonwealth involved serious injuries in a recent year, most of which required expensive medical care. Auto insurance is key to helping accident victims pay their bills, recover their lost wages, and get back on their feet without unnecessary stress.
For many years, Liberty Mutual marketed itself as a responsible insurance company that was dedicated to helping drivers afford car insurance and file claims easily. Because it’s one of the largest insurance companies in the country, you would expect Liberty to offer accident victims fair deals for their injuries.
The truth is that big insurance companies do not always take responsibility for their driver’s actions, and Liberty Mutual is no different. If you try to file a claim on your own against another driver or through your uninsured/underinsured policy, Liberty Mutual may offer you a low settlement, question your injuries, or deny your claim.
When our neighbors are injured by negligent drivers, GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys consider it a calling to make the claims process as easy as possible. We believe insurance companies should offer proper compensation to accident victims — and we hold them to that responsibility. As former members of the U.S. Marine Corps, Ken Gibson and John Singleton have served their country, and now they’re ready to serve you.

Liberty Mutual allows accident victims to file claims over the phone, online, through its app, or at a local office here in Virginia. At first, you might think this process is easy and that you can quickly get your medical bills, property damage, and lost wages paid for, hassle-free. Sadly, insurance companies rarely share the reality of the claims process.
After a Virginia car accident, most drivers know they need to exchange insurance information, report the crash to the police, and talk to an insurance adjuster about getting compensation for their injuries. When you first call an insurance adjuster at Liberty Mutual, she may appear friendly, compassionate, and sympathetic. She may make small talk, ask about your injuries, and suggest that she can get you a great deal.
But when you finally get to see that deal, the number may be much lower than you had expected. Insurance companies often offer small settlements at the start of a claim in the hopes that victims will accept it right out the gate. If you agree to the first settlement, you lose the right to demand more when you have a better understanding of your injuries and medical bills.
But even if you try to ask for more, Liberty Mutual will only increase the settlement slightly. An adjuster may say she can offer a big bonus if you agree to it immediately, or he may ask for much more information before your claim can be approved. This may include requiring you to see an independent doctor recommended by Liberty Mutual, make a recorded statement, or fill out additional paperwork.
Agreeing to these demands can be a major mistake. Big insurance companies can use an independent doctor’s reports and recorded statements as evidence against you, if you try to take your case to court later. Instead of letting an insurance adjuster shortchange you or deny your claim, your best option is to talk to an attorney about how to get the most from your claim.
Even customers of Liberty Mutual may face difficulties in getting compensation for their injuries. If you are filing a claim against another driver who has Liberty Mutual, you will still be treated as a number by its adjusters. Liberty Mutual will see your claim as chip in its profit margins and try to offer you a low settlement.
Another scenario you may face difficulties with is an uninsured (UM) or underinsured motorist claim (UIM). UM/UIM coverage is mandatory in Virginia and can provide important coverage if you are in an accident with an uninsured driver or a driver who does not have enough coverage to cover your losses. Given that 10% of drivers do not have car insurance in Virginia, UM/UMI policies are important to getting your bills paid after a crash. In these cases, you will have to make Liberty Mutual the at-fault party in your claim, which will put the insurance giant on the defensive.
Insurance companies want you to accept a settlement right after an accident to avoid having to pay more to you in a lawsuit. To get them to offer you a better deal, you will need to work with an experienced attorney who knows how to hold them to their policies.
At GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys, our attorneys have met with many clients in the Middle Peninsula, in Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex and King and Queen Counties, who were injured by negligent drivers and guided them through the claims process. We have had many cases with Liberty Mutual and know how difficult it is to get them to pay you a fair deal. We know how their insurance adjusters operate, the types of deals they offer victims, and, most of all, how to get you the best possible award.
If you sit down with us after an accident, we will explain how to get the most out of your claim in a free consultation. We will learn how you were injured, listen to the struggles you are facing due to your accident, go over the other driver’s — and your own — insurance policy, and prepare a plan to get you full compensation. I was rear-ended by someone who didn’t see me slowing for traffic in front of her because she had a dog in her car and she was handling her dog instead of watching the road. She was cited and pre-paid her ticket (was undeniably at-fault for the accident). I was slammed so hard my car was slammed into the car in….
