What is a motor scooter?

Virginia defines a motor scooter or a moped as a vehicle that meets the following criteria:

  • Fewer than three wheels touching the ground
  • A seat at least 24 inches high
  • A gasoline, hybrid, or electric motor that’s 50 cubic centimeters or less
  • A maximum speed of 35 mph

By contrast, a two-wheeled vehicle with a motor that’s larger than 50 cc is considered a motorcycle, and Virginia law requires riders to have both a driver’s and a motorcycle license to operate a motorcycle.

What causes motor scooter accidents?

Motor scooters are smaller and more difficult to see than motorcycles. That’s why drivers must remain alert and use care, especially in areas where scooters and mopeds are common. These vehicles are popular among students, so you are most likely to see them in college towns such as Charlottesville, Fairfax, Williamsburg, and Harrisonburg.

The following unsafe driving practices make it more likely that a vehicle will crash into a motor scooter:

  • Distracted driving
  • DUI
  • Speeding
  • Tailgating
  • Ignoring traffic laws
  • Careless turns
  • Hasty merges and lane changes
