Had a bad wreck in Mathews? Let us help

Mathews County is one of Virginia’s smaller counties, with only about 9,000 residents. It is also one of the few counties in our Commonwealth that doesn’t have a traffic light. (Charlotte and Bath are the other two.) This, combined with the fact that tourism is a major industry for our whole area, makes Mathews County a common "stop" for traffic accidents.

Although Mathews doesn’t have the major interstates and traffic congestion of urban localities, we still see many bad wrecks in this county. A car crash - even one on a rural road, at low speeds - can result in serious injuries. If you or a family member has been injured in an accident, you need to contact an experienced Mathews County accident attorney.

At GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys, we consider it our calling to get injured victims the compensation they need to recover. Call our Gloucester office for a free case evaluation at (804) 413-6777.

What are the insurance requirements in effect in Mathews County?

While Virginia doesn’t require drivers to carry auto insurance (instead, they can pay a $500 opt-out fee to the DMV), it does have minimum amounts of coverage for those who choose to be insured. Those minimums are:

  • $25,000 injury liability per person, per accident
  • $50,000 total injury liability per accident
  • $20,000 property damage liability per accident

Because automobile insurance isn’t required in Virginia, the state does require insured drivers to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. The minimums for uninsured/underinsured coverage must match the minimums of your liability coverage.

The problem with these minimums is that they rarely cover the true costs of an injury. For example, surgical treatment for a broken leg typically costs $17,000 to $35,000 or more. If you suffer more than one injury, or if your passengers are injured, the cost would almost certainly be more than the "total injury liability" minimum of $50,000. In such a case, you would need to sue the at-fault driver to recover the difference between his policy’s minimum and the actual cost of your injuries.

How much does an injury truly cost?

More than you think. Our experienced legal team at GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys knows that the true cost of car-crash injuries involves more than just medical bills and repairing or replacing your vehicle. You also have to figure in lost income from missed work, the possible loss of your career, pain and suffering, permanent injury or disability, scarring and disfigurement, mental trauma and its future treatment, and even the loss of joy of life.

When you ask us to handle your Mathews County accident claim, we know to ask for every one of these damages that applies to your unique situation.

How can you get just compensation after a Mathews County accident?

When another person caused the collision that injured you, you probably expect that the person (and his or her insurance company) will give you the money you need to recover fully. But as experienced car accident attorneys, we can tell you that this is not always the case. Few people are willing to openly admit they’re wrong on the best of days, and the same is true after a car wreck.

You also can’t count on an insurance company to offer you fair compensation for your losses either. Big insurance companies are businesses, and they make a profit by making the smallest payouts possible, regardless of your situation - or how much you need the money to recover.

As lawyers who live and work on the Middle Peninsula, we at GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys know how to help you. John has previously worked for big insurance companies, while Ken has tried hundreds of cases at the state and federal level. We’re more than familiar with the tactics big insurance companies use.

We first go to work investigating and researching your accident to present the strongest evidence possible to the local adjusters who are handling your claim. If that doesn’t get you the full payout you deserve, we’ll take your case to court.

As former U.S. Marines, we’re not afraid to tackle a challenge. We will see to it that you get fair compensation for your losses, or we don’t get paid. Call us at (804) 413-6777 today for a free consultation.
