What are the five most dangerous intersections in Mathews County, VA? And how you can stay safe while driving through them

By Ken Gibson on July 10, 2023

To help our neighbors in Mathews, we at GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys are sharing the five most hazardous intersections in Mathews—places where you want to be extra cautious.

It’s always a good idea to take time to check opposing traffic before turning, especially at intersections where there’s no traffic signal.

  1. Windsor Road/Route 198

Dutton

Windsor Road is a two-lane road that ends traveling northbound at two-lane Route 198 (Buckley Hall Road) way past Fort Nonsense.

There is a stop sign that is seldom observed by drivers turning right onto Route 198.

Drivers traveling east along Route 198 should watch for opposing traffic when turning left onto Windsor Road. Drivers on Windsor Road should STOP and wait for a break in traffic before turning right, and be very careful crossing Route 198 when turning left.

  1. Windsor Road/Route 14

Windsor Road is a two-lane road that ends while traveling southbound at Route 14 (John Clayton Memorial Highway).

There’s no traffic signal.  Drivers traveling north along Route 14 should watch out for opposing traffic when making a left turn. Drivers on Windsor Road should wait for a good break in traffic before turning either way onto Route 14.

  1. North River Road/Route 14

North

North River Road (SR 617) is a two-lane road that ends at two-lane Route 14 (John Clayton Memorial Highway), right by Emmaus Baptist Church. There is no traffic light.

Drivers traveling west along Route 14 should watch out for opposing traffic when turning left onto North River Road. And drivers heading north on North River Road should make sure the coast is clear before turning right.

  1. Twiggs Ferry Road/Route 198

Dutton

Twiggs Ferry is a two-lane road that ends at two-lane Route 198 (Buckley Hall Road). Landmarks include a BP gas station and ETC Vintage Antique Store. There is no traffic signal at this intersection.

Drivers along Twiggs Ferry Road should check closely for traffic before turning right onto Route 198. Come to a complete stop at the stop sign, and make sure no cars are approaching before turning left.

  1. Main Street/Buckley Hall Road

Main Street is a two-lane road that ends while traveling northbound at two-lane Buckley Hall Road (Route 198). Landmarks include a BP gas station, Carl’s Jr., and Xtreme Car Wash.

It’s a three-way intersection, but there’s no stop sign for drivers traveling north along Main Street, so proceed with caution when turning onto Buckley Hall Road.
