John Singleton speaks at Gloucester’s Senior Safety Fair, reviews key legal documents seniors need
Gloucester County Triad’s 2015 Senior Safety Fair was a huge success, with more than 165 seniors attending at Newington Baptist Church. Several organizations offered informational booths with useful information for the group, including GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys, Riverside Health System, and Gloucester County Community Education.
GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys partner John Singleton was a featured speaker on the topic, “Fact or Fiction: Estate Planning and Aging.” Singleton explained the importance of seniors having certain legal documents to protect their property and health as they get older.
He recommended that they have a will prepared to designate where their property goes after their death – a will helps prevent squabbling among family members after a loved one passes away.
He also recommended that seniors have a durable power of attorney to permit a trusted family member or friend to handle their financial affairs if they become too sick to handle their own financial matters.
Finally, Singleton advised seniors to have a medical power of attorney (also called an advance medical directive) prepared to permit a trusted family member or friend to make medical decisions on the senior’s behalf if the senior is unable to competently make those decisions due to an incapacitating illness.
During the Safety Fair, attorneys and staff enjoyed visiting with attendees, and sharing safety information with them, including cards to go in their glove compartments with “What should I do if I’m in a car accident.”
The Senior Safety Fair and GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys held drawings from those who registered following the event. The winner of the drawing for a 42-piece road safety kit was Pastor Mike Gray of Newington Baptist. Congratulations, Pastor Mike!
