Meet our “Texts=Wrecks” finalists, who are taking a stand for safety!

By Beth Gibson on May 30, 2019

Distracted driving claimed the lives of at least 6,227 pedestrians last year across the United States, and that’s not counting the number of people who were in cars. The worst part is, most of these accidents were likely due to a smartphone, which means they were 100 percent preventable!

A brand-new study has shown that Virginia ranks No. 1 for distracted driving in the country, and it’s certainly not a statistic we’re going to be celebrating (Zendrive’s Distracted Driving Study 2019). Gloucester County, where our law office is located, had 78 distraction-related crashes in 2018. It’s no wonder we at GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys are spreading the news that Texts=Wrecks.

From our billboards to our community outreach at local high schools, we’re taking action. And we asked aspiring college students to help us through our Texts=Wrecks Scholarship 2019. Last year, we received nearly 400 applications, and this year, we received 785! This opportunity was for students across the United States, since we are seeing a nationwide epidemic of “phone addicts,” and the prize is $1,000 for college expenses!

We asked for creative solutions to combat distracted driving in our lives. Based on the responses we got (check out last year’s winner, Gillian!), we strongly believe the next generation will be leaders in changing the way America drives. In no particular order, we would like to congratulate:

  • Mackenzie C. – Chesapeake, VA
  • Gracie L. – Morganton, NC
  • Hector A. – College Station, TX
  • Tyianna P. – Louisville, KY
  • Glynncarynn C. – Gloucester VA

Great job, finalists! We loved your tips and tricks to keep yourselves and your families focused while on the road. You’re still in the running for $1,000 toward educational expenses! Please visit our blog and Facebook page to find out who we believe answered our call most effectively. Our winner announcement will be June 13, 2019.

Thank you to everyone who applied, and we wish you the best in your lifelong journey of learning, growing, and sharing in your community. Just remember… Texts=Wrecks!
