Help these outstanding charities, or one you love, help others this Christmas right here in Gloucester and Mathews

By Ken Gibson on December 5, 2022

At GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys, we want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

During this season when many of us are getting together to enjoy food and fellowship, it’s important to reach out to the less fortunate to offer a helping hand. We know that our generous community agrees and is always ready to help.

In that spirit of giving, GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys would like to spotlight a few wonderful nonprofits we know and trust that are helping people in Gloucester and Mathews. We know there are many other great ones as well.

These organizations welcome your donations of money, food, and other items. You can also volunteer your time. Contact them to see what they need and how you can help, and consider creating a meaningful family or organizational activity by giving.

1.      Gloucester United Emergency Shelter Team (GUEST)

GUEST (or Gloucester United Emergency Shelter Team) provides year-round day shelters with free showers, hot meals, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi for people without homes.   In the winter, GUEST works with local churches and civic organizations to provide safe, warm overnight shelters for men, women, and families in need.

Donations are always appreciated, and GUEST also needs volunteers of all types. To learn more, call (804) 792-5046, visit GUEST online, email them at [email protected], or check out their Facebook page.

2.      Bread for Life

Bread for Life is a community pantry serving our brothers and sisters who need food. This ecumenical food ministry is run by members of more than 10 local churches. Started in 2009 by Fr. James Cowles and Deanna Cobb of the Church of St. Therese in Gloucester, Bread for Life has grown to become the largest food assistance program in Hampton Roads.

The pantry includes a variety of frozen meats, produce, canned food, bread, fresh local crops, and dry goods for clients. Financial donations and gifts of non-perishable foods, paper, and household products are greatly appreciated. Bread for Life can always use volunteers as well.

Bread for Life is located at 7840 John Clayton Memorial Highway in Gloucester. Call (804) 694-9366 to find out how you, your family, or your organization can help. You can also email [email protected], visit their website on the internet, or visit their Facebook page.

3.       Gloucester Salvation Army

The Salvation Army in Gloucester is part of the universal Christian Church that provides food, shelter, and emergency utility assistance to those in need.   It offers special Christmas assistance, including the Angel Tree program, which allows donors to connect with local families and provide Christmas gifts for children.

The Salvation Army accepts monetary donations and gifts of reusable goods. For more information, contact Maria Post at (804) 642-3960. You can also email Maria at [email protected] or visit the Gloucester Facebook page.

4.      Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic

For more than 20 years, the Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic has provided community-based healthcare for residents of Gloucester and Mathews who don’t have health insurance or are covered by Medicaid. The GMCC wants to make sure people get the health care they need, when they need it.

The GMCC relies on volunteers, paid professionals and support staff, and generous donations from community members.

If you would like to volunteer your time or give money, just call the GMCC at (804) 210-1368, visit their Facebook page, or check out their website to learn more.
