What are the 10 most dangerous intersections in Gloucester County, VA? And how can you stay safe while driving through them

By John Singleton on April 20, 2023

You already know to stay alert when you’re driving because a careless driver could always harm you or your loved ones.

To help you stay safe, we are sharing this list of the 10 most dangerous intersections in Gloucester.

We at GibsonSingleton consider it a calling to help our friends and neighbors in Gloucester. That’s why we encourage you to be extra cautious at the following intersections.

  1. Woods Cross Road/Route 17

Area: An unincorporated community called Woods Crossroads

Woods Cross Road is a two-lane road that crosses four-lane Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway). Landmarks include Dutton’s Grocery, Dollar General, and B&E Auto Care. There is no traffic light.

Drivers traveling along Route 17 in either direction can make a right turn by merging, but they need to cross two lanes of traffic headed in the opposite direction to make a left turn.

Drivers traveling along Woods Cross Road should always stop at the stop sign before turning. To make a left turn, drivers must cross two lanes of traffic – be sure to wait until there’s a safe opportunity to merge. Far too many bad accidents have happened at this intersection.

  1. Crab Thicket Road/Route 14

Area: Gloucester County

Crab Thicket Road is a two-lane road that ends at a T-intersection with four-lane Route 14 (John Clayton Memorial Highway). Landmarks include U-Haul, Exxon, and 7-Eleven.

There is no traffic signal, only stop signs for drivers traveling along Crab Thicket Road. Drivers entering Highway 14 should check closely for traffic because the speed limit is 55 mph.

  1. Main Street/Route 17

Area: Gloucester

Main Street is a two-lane road that intersects with four-lane Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway). Main Street is called Fiddler’s Green Road west of Route 17. Landmarks include Newington Baptist Church.

This is an active intersection controlled by a traffic light. Southbound drivers merging onto Fiddler’s Green Road should watch out for westbound traffic coming from Main Street.

  1. C. Walker Road/Route 17

Area: Gloucester County

T.C. Walker Road, also called SR 629, is a two-lane road that ends while traveling westbound at four-lane Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway.) This is a three-way intersection controlled by a traffic light. There is a blinking yellow arrow for drivers going south on Route 17 who wish to turn onto T.C. Walker Road.

Drivers should make sure that northbound traffic is clear before making a left turn from Route 17 to T.C. Walker Road.

  1. Bray’s Point Road/Route 17

Area: Gloucester

Bray’s Point is a two-lane road that crosses Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway). Landmarks include Exxon, AutoMax, 7-Eleven, and R&M Used Tire and Auto Repair.

There is no dedicated left turn lane or dedicated left turn light along Bray’s Point Road, so drivers should proceed with caution and be careful when merging into traffic while making a right turn onto Route 17.

  1. Providence Road/Route 17

Area: Gloucester Point

Providence Road, also called SR 363, is a two-lane road that ends while traveling eastbound at four-lane Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway). Landmarks include Abbitt Realty, Care-A-lot Pet Supply, and Gloucester County Public Works Garage.

There is a blinking yellow left turn arrow for drivers going north along Route 17 who wish to turn onto Providence Road. Drivers should make sure southbound traffic is clear before making a left turn from Route 17 to Providence Road.

  1. Guinea Road/Hook Road (Route 216)/Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway)

Area: Gloucester

Guinea Road (Route 216) is a two-lane road that crosses Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway) at an intersection that’s controlled by a stoplight. Landmarks include Walgreens, McDonald’s, Right Aid, and Advance Auto Parts.

Drivers traveling along Guinea Road should use extra care when making a left turn. This intersection is due for road improvement starting in early 2023 and ending by October 2023, to add a dedicated left-turn lane and a dedicated through lane for traffic approaching Route 17.

  1. Hook Road/Hayes Road

Area: Gloucester Point

Hook Road is a two-lane road that runs into two-lane Hayes Road (State Route 1212). Landmarks include Basta’s Floor Covering and Carquest Auto Parts. There is no traffic signal, just a stop sign for drivers traveling west on Hook Road.

Southbound drivers on Hayes Road should watch out for oncoming traffic if they want to make a left turn onto Hook Road, and westbound drivers on Hook Road should check for traffic before turning onto Hayes Road.

  1. York Crossing Drive/Route 17

Location: Gloucester Point

York Crossing Drive is a two-lane road that intersects with four-lane Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway). This intersection is controlled by a traffic light.  Landmarks include Hayes Plaza, Dollar General, AutoZone, and a U.S. Post Office.

York Crossing Drive is the feeder road for the busy York River Crossing Shopping Center and is the scene of many car accidents.

  1. Tidemill Road/Route 17
