One mother’s story: Take the time to save a child’s life

By Ken Gibson on October 17, 2017

“We’re just going around the corner.” “We’ll be right back.” “We’re almost home.” These are just a few of the reasons people use for not buckling children into car seats—or buckling their own seat belts.

A Pennsylvania mother is thankful she didn’t make any of those excuses when she picked up her children—a 6-week-old and a 3-year-old—from preschool.

On the way home, the mom made a quick detour to pick up some milk and was brutally rear-ended by another car. Her 2015 Honda CR-V was totaled, but she and her kids survived without a scratch.

It was just a quick, routine trip, but she took the time to secure her children into their car seats before hitting the road. On her Facebook page, the mom posted a picture of the accident’s aftermath: the results are shocking. Her Honda CR-V is an unrecognizable mass of twisted steel; in the foreground are her children’s two unscratched car seats.

This photo serves as a reminder to parents and all adults that it is always worth the time to make sure children are securely fastened into their car seats before starting your car. Car accidents are still the No. 1 cause of death in U.S. children, and many of these deaths could have been prevented by the proper use of car seats or seat belts.
