Four questions to ask before you choose a personal injury attorney

By John Singleton on October 23, 2022

Finding the right Virginia personal injury attorney to help after you’ve been injured in a wreck can be difficult. That’s why our team at GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys put together a list of helpful questions to ask when you first call or meet with a potential law firm.

 1) Will I get to work directly with your top attorneys, or any attorney at all?

When you sign up to work with a personal injury law firm, you’re putting your trust in someone else. It’s natural to expect that you’ll be working with attorneys.

Sadly though, many people are surprised to find that, once they have signed up with a large law firm, they may never meet with an attorney, much less with one of the firm’s partners.  Instead, they meet with staff who “manage their case.”  These clients tell us they end up feeling like a number, while their cases often get settled quickly for a minimal amount.

At GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys, you will always work with one of our partners, Ken Gibson or me, (John Singleton).  You will meet and talk with one or both of us at your initial consultation and throughout your case. You will also work with our experienced and dedicated staff or paralegal assistants, who diligently collect your medical records and bills and help us prepare for trial.

We have the legal expertise to serve you well.  Ken is a former federal prosecutor, and I honed my skills working for large insurance companies. So, we know how to work wisely to help you get a fair settlement to cover your medical bills and other expenses from your accident. Ken and I will not back down from getting you justice.

2)  How will I be treated by the people at your law firm?

Will I be treated like a number at this firm, or will the lawyers and staff get to know me personally?  Who will keep me informed about my case throughout the process?  What is the motivation of the attorneys who are helping me?

When you first visit a potential law firm, notice how you are treated.  Are you greeted with a smile?  Are the lawyers willing to answer all of your questions?  Do you feel heard and valued as a person?

We chose to go into personal injury law because we can help people in significant ways.

We take joy in helping people and their families get their lives back on track after they’ve suffered an unfortunate event. We value each of our clients as unique people, and we take time to learn about what’s important to them.  The relationships we develop with clients makes us better advocates for them.

At our firm, you will be greeted with a smile and treated with respect and compassion. In fact, we often stay in touch with our clients long after their cases are resolved.

You will also get the legal expertise of many larger, big-city law firms.  In other words, we offer you small-town care with big-city experience.

3)  What are a law firm’s clients saying about them?

We encourage you to read the reviews of any law firm you consider hiring – check Google, Facebook, as well as the firm’s own website.  If possible, talk to trusted people in your community to find out what they have to say.

At GibsonSingleton, we are honored and humbled by the review our clients have written about us. Here are a few of their kind words:

  • “First class attorneys”
  • “Great to work with”
  • “Best attorneys in town”
  • “Amazing to work with”
  • “A knight in shining armor”
  • “Very professional and understanding”
  • “They don’t let up until the fight is over.”
  • “Personal and professional. Kind and helpful.”
  • “Professional, dependable, and family-oriented”
  • “Excellent service, very knowledgeable and friendly”
  • “The firm looks out for the best interest of its clients”
  • “Very understanding and they listened to my concerns”
  • “They treated us with great respect and not like a number.”
  • “Super respectful and very helpful in my case! Totally recommended!!!”
  • “Professional, courteous, and always kept me up-to-date on what was happening with my case”

4) What types of cases do you handle? And do you have a strong record of success?

Ask any potential firm what types of cases it handles to make sure the firm’s expertise is what you need. Ask about the firm’s record of success in cases like yours, and what you can expect from them.

Every case is different, and some are worth more than others; but at GibsonSingleton, we have a strong record of obtaining solid results for our clients.

Our winning cases include the following types of accidents:

  • Car accidents
  • Truck accidents
  • Bicycle accidents
  • Motorcycle accidents
  • Slip and fall accidents
  • Dog attacks
  • ATV accidents
  • DUI accidents
  • Boat accidents
  • Moped accidents
  • Sexual assault
