Car Safety | Virginia Personal Injury Blog - Part 3
What does Captain David Shield of Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office wish you knew about staying safe?
GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys: What do you wish more people in our community knew about personal safety?
Captain Shield:
How can you drive safely in snow?
Driving in even a little snow can be difficult for us Virginians because we’re usually out of practice! Here are top tips from AAA to help you and your loved ones:
Get ready for teen drivers on the road
Back-to-school time is almost underway, and that means many high schoolers will be starting driver’s education and venturing onto local roads.
Getting a first driver’s license is big milestone. But the safest drivers on the road have years of experience, which teenagers don’t have yet. Without experience, young drivers are more likely to misjudge situations, forget traffic laws, and miscalculate size and speed of cars. As a result, young drivers make the most mistakes and unintentionally endanger the most lives on the road.
Drive safely, grads! Make sure graduation season is safe
Spring means high school and college graduation for many in our area. For some, celebrating includes drinking alcohol. (Of course the legal drinking age is 21, and violations for underage possession of alcohol can mean steep penalties.) But if you or a loved one are of legal age and choose to drink, we at GibsonSingleton Virginia Injury Attorneys want to make sure you stay safe by following a few tips:
Would your child’s car seat or booster work in a crash?
Most parents believe their child’s car seat is installed correctly. But research shows that only three out of 10 are. As a father and defender of the injured, that statistic caught my attention: 7 out of 10 kids in child safety seats are not properly buckled in.
Vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of kids. Why? In many cases, children are either not buckled into their car seats properly, or the parents didn’t realize that a booster seat was vital to having the seat belt work properly.
Buzzed driving is drunk driving: Tips for driving safely during the holidays
No one supports drunk driving, but bars, restaurants, and holiday parties that serve alcohol have parking areas. Unless you abstain from alcohol or drink only at home, you or a loved one could be at-risk for driving while impaired or from other drunk drivers, particularly during the holidays.
Consider these sobering statistics: In December, an average of 25 people a day die in drunk driving crashes. That means approximately 775 people won’t make it home for the holidays. In December, 60 percent of fatal crashes between midnight and 3 a.m. involve a drunk driver. That’s why from Dec. 13, 2013, through Jan. 1, 2014, state and local law enforcement will be out in force cracking down on drunk drivers.
