Gibson, Singleton participate in drunk driving mock sentencing for Middlesex teens

By Beth Gibson on May 4, 2017

Just in time for senior prom and graduation, GibsonSingleton Virgnia Injury Attorneys Ken Gibson and John Singleton helped stage a mock “driving under the influence” (DUI) sentencing for Middlesex High School seniors. The hearing demonstrated what can happen when teens drink alcohol and drive.

Attorneys Gibson and Singleton worked with Middlesex County School Resource Officer and event organizer Chris Gatling to stage this moving event.

First, the Middlesex High School senior class was ushered into a courtroom in the Middlesex Courthouse. Virginia Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Hurd acted as the judge. Gibson played the role of prosecutor, while Singleton played the role of defense attorney.

Second, the class was shown a video to set up the scenario. A Middlesex senior then played the defendant, a girl who rarely drank alcohol, but who had gotten drunk, was involved in a wreck, and accidentally killed her best friend as he sat in the passenger’s seat.

The defendant’s real mother portrayed the teen’s mother, and a Middlesex sheriff’s deputy summarized his investigation of the accident. The Middlesex victim/witness coordinator acted the role of the grieving mother of the student killed in the drunk driving accident.

GibsonSingleton Virgnina Injury Attorneys partner Ken Gibson said: “Too often, John [Singleton] and I see the tragic results of drunk driving in our work of representing injured people. A mock DUI sentencing showing what actually happens after a drunk driving accident was a powerful way of showing what can be hard to describe. We believe this event made a strong impression on the high school students and made clear the real-life consequences of drunk driving.”
